Don’t ever do a role as a favor to someone. Have you ever been asked to do a short film for a friend? Or take on a role in a show that isn’t at your regular rate - but it’s a role that was essentially handed to you by a friend or a friend of a friend? Have you ever said yes to a friend who is down an actor in their play and needs a substitute asap? And here is what I say: don't do any artistic favors. Controversial statement right? But here’s what I mean by that. Don’t do a favor. Do the job. Accept the gig and treat it like a job you were dying to get. 

I feel like different versions of this advice are currently floating around the internet. Be a volunteer not a recruit is one of my favorite versions. Let me also add my two cents on how to be a volunteer and not a recruit. 

(Has anyone besides me noticed I’m a listicle girlie? It’s giving type A and I’m here for it - hope it’s working for you too!) 

1. Treat the role like you wanted it and then booked it. - Gratefulness 101

2. Go backwards in the process. - Get fully memorized & prepped. 

3. Dive into the research - know the time period, the clothes, the cultural climate - get well versed in the world. 

4. Run your scenes - like your prepping for an audition - be the responsible actor. 

5. Enjoy the ride like you’ve stepped on a roller coaster and can’t get off halfway. Scream. Throw up your hands. Whoop it up. Whatever the occasion calls for but stay committed. 

6. Have fun and enjoy that you have a reputation and community that wants to work with you whenever they can…whether they can afford ya or not.
